Why it happens

Why Do Shares Go Unclaimed?

It happens to many families, and it’s rarely anyone’s fault. Each cause has a clear fix.

01

Address changed

A move that never reached the registrar means every subsequent notice — dividend, annual report, buyback offer — goes to an address that no longer exists.

Easy fix once your address is updated
02

The family member holding it passed away

Shares don't transfer automatically on death. Without transmission being completed, the shares stay exactly where they were — invisible to the people who inherited it.

A clear process for families
03

A name or signature mismatch

Marriage, a legal name change, or simply a signature that's drifted over decades — the registrar's records and your ID stop matching.

A simple records update
04

Certificates lost or damaged

Physical share certificates from an earlier era are easy to misplace and, once damaged, hard to act on without a defined process.

A new certificate can be issued
05

Dividends unclaimed for seven years

Under the Companies Act, 2013, shares whose dividends stay unpaid for seven years move to the IEPF. They aren’t lost, and can be claimed back through Form IEPF-5.

Unclaimed Shares: Common Questions

The things people ask us most, answered plainly — no jargon, no assumed knowledge.

Still not sure where you stand?

Tell us what you know and we’ll point you to the right route. Checking is always free.

What are unclaimed shares?
Shares or dividends the owner hasn’t collected, often after a move, a name change or a death in the family. In most cases they still belong to the owner or their family.
What is IEPF?
The Investor Education and Protection Fund is a government fund. Dividends unpaid for seven consecutive years, and the shares linked to them, move into it. Nothing is lost: the owner or legal heir can claim them back.
Can old physical share certificates still be recovered?
In most cases, yes — the route depends on whether the certificate is still legible, whether the issuing company still exists under the same or a changed name, and whether the holding has already moved to IEPF.
What happens if the shareholder has died?
The shares can be moved to the nominee or legal heirs through transmission. The documents depend on whether a nominee was named, whether the holding was joint, and its value. We tell you exactly what your case needs.
What documents might I need?
It depends on the situation, but a share certificate, dividend statement, and identity documents cover most cases. See "Documents You May Need" for a full picture.
What if I don't have the original certificate?
A missing certificate doesn't end the process — a duplicate can often be issued once ownership is otherwise established. It usually means an additional step, not a dead end.
How long can recovery take?
It varies by case complexity — a straightforward IEPF claim moves differently from a multi-generation transmission. We'll give you a realistic estimate once we understand your specific situation.
Why can a claim be rejected?
Most rejections come from mismatched documentation or an incomplete chain of ownership — both are usually fixable with the right supporting paperwork.
Can someone living outside India recover shares?
Yes — the process is the same, though attestation requirements differ for NRIs, and several steps can be completed without travelling to India.
Do you charge to check my case?
No. Checking is always free, for all your assets and as often as you need. No fee is due until a claim process starts, and only after you’ve met our team and agreed to go ahead.
Is it safe to share my details?
Yes. To start, we only need your name and phone number. We never ask for bank details or payment to check your case.
Is MyUnclaimedWealth.in a government service?
No. We’re an independent private team. IEPF claims are decided by the company and the IEPF Authority. We help you prepare the claim and follow up until it’s resolved.
