Your question, answered

I have lost my share certificates. Have I lost the shares?

No. Your shares are recorded with the company, not on the paper. Losing it changes the steps, not what’s yours.

Hello — I’ll walk you through this. Six short questions.

What Happened to Your Papers?

Lost, damaged, or never found by the family: all can be solved.

The certificate was lost

We confirm your holding and get a replacement started.

The paper is damaged

A damaged original is often easier to replace than a lost one.

The family never found the papers

We trace the holding from names and company clues.

What changes the route.

Do you know the folio number or the company name?

If yes

That’s enough to find the holding in the company’s register first.

If no

Still recoverable. We can often trace what was held from a name alone.

Were the certificates lost, or damaged?

If yes

If it’s lost, some registrars ask for a police complaint for the replacement. We’ll check if yours does first.

If no

Damaged ones are usually easier, because you can hand the old paper back in.

Is the holding in your own name?

If yes

Then you apply for the replacement directly.

If no

Then the family’s right to claim is shown alongside the replacement. The two are usually done together.

Lost Share Papers: Your Questions

Clear answers before you decide anything.

Have I lost the shares if the certificate is missing?

No. The certificate is evidence of the holding; the ownership record is maintained by the company or registrar.

Can a duplicate certificate be issued?

A replacement route may be available after the holding, identity and entitlement are confirmed.

Can I start without the folio number?

Yes. A company name or shareholder name may be enough to begin tracing the record.

What if the certificate was damaged rather than lost?

A damaged original may be surrendered and can follow a different process from a certificate that cannot be found.

What if the missing papers belonged to a relative?

The review may combine a duplicate or tracing route with transmission to the eligible claimant.
