A document guide for your case

Which documents will I need to recover unclaimed shares?

Case review panelMyUnclaimedWealth.in

The short answer

It depends on your route, and you can start before collecting anything. ID and bank details are almost always needed. Inheritance, lost certificates, name mismatches and overseas cases each add only a few more.

01

Always needed

Whatever your route.

What this stage involves

Identity proof and PAN for the person claiming, proof of current address, and bank account details for where any proceeds should go.

The address on your documents will often differ from the one on the register. That is expected and is corrected as part of the work.

02

Proof of the holding, if you have it

Helpful, but not essential.

What this stage involves

Share certificates, a folio number, an old dividend warrant, or a letter from the company or registrar. Any of these speeds things up considerably. None of them is required to start, because the register — not the paperwork — is what establishes ownership.

03

If the shareholder has died

The route with the most papers.

What this stage involves

A death certificate, and proof of who is entitled to claim. What counts as proof depends on whether a nomination was registered, whether there is a will, and how many heirs there are.

Whether a succession certificate is needed is case-specific, and obtaining one when it is not required costs months unnecessarily. It is one of the first things we establish.

04

If a certificate is lost

A few extra declarations.

What this stage involves

Registrars require declarations and indemnities before issuing a duplicate, and some ask for a police complaint where a certificate was lost rather than damaged. Requirements vary by registrar and by value, which is why a generic checklist found online often does not match your case.

05

If you’re claiming from abroad

Attestation is the extra step.

What this stage involves

Documents signed abroad generally need attestation before they will be accepted in India, and the form depends on the country you are in. Getting this wrong is the most common reason an overseas claim is returned, so it is established before anything is signed.

Claim Documents: Your Questions

Straight answers, and where your own case might be different.

Can I start without the original share certificate?

Yes. A company name, investor name, folio, dividend record, or copy of an old letter may be enough to begin checking the route.

Which identity documents are usually needed?

Claims commonly use PAN, current address proof, and bank details for the claimant. The final list depends on the authority and route involved.

What is needed when the shareholder has died?

A death certificate and evidence showing who is entitled to claim are normally required. The exact evidence depends on nomination, a will, and the heirs involved.

Is a succession certificate always required?

No. Whether it is required depends on the facts and the value and type of holding. The route should be checked before obtaining one.

What happens if a share certificate is lost?

The registrar may require declarations, an indemnity, and other evidence before a duplicate is issued. Requirements vary with the company and case.

Can a name mismatch be corrected?

Often, yes. The documents must connect the name on the old record with the claimant’s current legal identity.

Do overseas documents need attestation?

Documents signed outside India commonly require an accepted form of attestation. The method depends on the country and the receiving authority.

Should I prepare every form before contacting you?

No. Identifying the correct claim route first prevents unnecessary forms and avoids collecting documents that do not apply.
