A plain-English guide

How does recovering unclaimed shares actually work?

Case review panelMyUnclaimedWealth.in

The short answer

Most cases follow four simple stages: find the shares, pick the right route, prepare the claim, and follow it through. You can start even if you don’t know where the shares are yet.

The process

The 4 Stages of Share Recovery

You don’t need to work these out before calling us. This is what our team checks, and why.

01

Stage one: finding what exists

First we find out what’s actually held, and where it sits today.

What this stage involves

We check the company and its registrar for a holding in the name you give us, following the company through any renaming, merger or demerger along the way. This is also where we find out whether the shares are still on the register or have been transferred to the IEPF — the answer decides everything that follows.

If nothing is found, we tell you plainly rather than keeping a case open.

02

Stage two: picking the right route

The same shares can need very different steps, depending on what happened.

What this stage involves

A holding still on the register, one moved to the IEPF, and one belonging to someone who has died are three different claims with three different sets of documents. Cases involving a lost certificate, a name that no longer matches, or a claimant living abroad each add their own requirements.

We establish which combination applies before any paperwork is prepared, because starting down the wrong route usually means starting again.

03

Stage three: preparing the claim

The biggest part of the work, and we take it on for you.

What this stage involves

We prepare the forms, declarations and supporting documents the specific route requires, and resolve the mismatches that almost always surface at this point — signatures recorded decades ago, names spelled differently, addresses long out of date.

Where something is missing, we tell you what is needed and why, rather than handing you a generic checklist.

04

Stage four: seeing it through

Sending the claim isn’t the end. We stay with it.

What this stage involves

Queries come back. Registrars ask for clarification, nodal officers need to verify, and documents occasionally have to be resubmitted. A query is a normal part of the process, not a rejection — but an unanswered one leaves a claim sitting indefinitely.

We manage that correspondence through to resolution so you are not chasing anyone.

Share Recovery: Your Questions

Straight answers, and where your own case might be different.

Can I begin if I only know the company name?

Yes. A company name, investor name, old address, folio reference, or any surviving paperwork can provide a useful starting point. The first review is used to establish what can be checked.

Do I need to know whether the shares are with IEPF?

No. Confirming whether the holding remains with the company or has moved to IEPF is part of identifying the correct route.

What happens during the first review?

We look at the details you remember, identify the likely record trail, and explain which recovery route appears relevant before formal work begins.

Is every unclaimed-share case an IEPF claim?

No. Shares may still be on the company register, may need transmission after a death, may require duplicate documents, or may have moved to IEPF. The records decide the route.

Can a legal heir start the recovery process?

Yes. The route first establishes the holding and then the documents needed to show who is entitled to claim it.

What if the name or address in the old records is different?

Older records often contain former names, initials, or previous addresses. These differences are reviewed as part of the claim route and do not automatically prevent recovery.

Do I need to collect every document before contacting you?

No. Begin with what you have. Once the route is understood, you can receive a case-specific list instead of collecting documents that may not apply.

What happens after a claim is submitted?

The company, registrar, nodal officer, or IEPF Authority may review the claim and ask questions. Follow-up continues until the claim reaches a clear outcome.
