A guide to stuck claims

Why was my share or IEPF claim delayed or rejected?

The short answer

Most delays and rejections can be fixed. We read the message, check the records and the route, and find what will get your claim moving again.

The process

01

The name doesn’t match

The most common cause.

What this stage involves

Registers were written by hand over decades. Initials were used instead of full names, spellings drifted, and married names replaced maiden names without the register ever being told.

None of that affects entitlement. It affects the evidence needed to show the two names are the same person, and there is an established way to provide it.

02

The signature has changed

Normal after 30 years, but a common reason for return.

What this stage involves

A signature recorded decades ago rarely matches one made today. This is resolved through attestation rather than being a barrier, but a claim submitted without addressing it will usually come back.

03

The wrong route was used

Costly, because it’s usually found out late.

What this stage involves

A holding transferred to the IEPF cannot be claimed through the registrar alone, and a claim on behalf of someone who has died needs entitlement established first. Submitting through the wrong route can mean months lost before anyone tells you.

04

A query went unanswered

The quietest cause, and the easiest to avoid.

What this stage involves

Registrars and the IEPF Authority routinely raise queries before settling a claim. A query is part of the process, not a rejection — but an unanswered one leaves the claim sitting indefinitely with nobody chasing it.

05

The company is slow to verify

Out of your hands, but it can be pushed along.

What this stage involves

An IEPF claim depends on the company's nodal officer verifying it before the authority acts. Where a company is unresponsive or has changed hands, this is usually where the delay sits, and it needs persistent follow-up rather than resubmission.

Delayed or Rejected Claims: Your Questions

Straight answers, and where your own case might be different.

Does rejection mean I am not entitled to the shares?

Usually, no. Many rejections concern documents, mismatched information, or the claim route rather than ownership itself.

Can an IEPF claim be submitted again?

A claim can often be filed again after the reason for rejection or return has been understood and corrected.

Why does a name mismatch delay a claim?

The reviewer needs evidence that the person named in the old record and the present claimant are the same person or are legally connected.

What if my signature has changed?

A changed signature is common in old holdings. The registrar may ask for verification or attestation using its accepted process.

What does a company verification delay mean?

For an IEPF claim, the company’s nodal officer verifies the claim before the authority acts. A pending verification may need focused follow-up with the company.

Is an unanswered query the same as rejection?

No. A query asks for clarification or additional evidence. The claim can remain pending until the response is accepted.

Can you review a claim started by someone else?

Yes. Share the forms, messages, SRN, or latest response you have so the present position can be understood.

Do I have to restart the entire process?

Not always. The next step depends on where the claim stopped and whether the existing filing can be answered, corrected, or needs a fresh submission.
